French Onion Soup using Watkins Products
I first learned to cook using Watkins Products and their easy to follow recipes. Even though Watkins company started back in 1868, their recipes were still tasty in the 1990’s when I first discovered them. Now, I’ve re-discovered the simplicity of using their award-winning ingredients and I thought this blog would be the perfect place to introduce them to you.
No time like the present to get started. Here’s a recipe using Watkins Onion Soup base and Beef Base and spices.

Fabulous French Onion Soup

- 3 TB/45 ml butter or margarine
- 1 1/2 quarts/liters water
- 1/4 cup/60 ml Watkins Beef Soup & Gravy Mix

- 1/4 tsp/1.2 ml Watkins Black Pepper
- 1/4 tsp/1.2ml Watkins Cayenne Pepper
- 1/4 tsp/1.2ml Watkins Organic Thyme
- 6 slices French Bread
- 1 cup/250 ml shredded cheese (Swiss or Cheddar)

Gradually add in water, soup bases, and seasonings. Bring to a boil; cover and simmer about 15 minutes. Meanwhile toast one side of the bread under oven broiler until golden brown. Butter untoasted side and sprinkle slices with 1/4 cup cheese. broil until cheese is melted. To serve, spoon hot soup into ovenproof bowls or mugs; float french bread slices and sprinkle with remaining cheese. broil until cheese is bubbly and brown.
